Etna e Taormina

Departure from your hotel at 7:00 am. Visit the biggest volcano in Europe: Etna!(3340 mt.). Arrival at "Rifugio Sapienza" situated at 1900 mt.. For those interested, there will be the possibility to go up by cablecar and Jeep to the height of 3000 mt.. In the afternoon a visit to Taormina to see the Greek Theatre. Free time for shopping. Return in the evening to your hotel for dinner.

 Our day trip to Etna brings us to the top of the highest volcano in Europe. Although the volcano is active, it is safe to visit his four craters. The highest mountain in Sicily with its smoking summit can be seen from anywhere on the island and changes his aspect by its constant seismic activity. Taormina is known for its mild climate, lush vegetation, superb palaces, dreamy alleyways, elegant squares and the panoramic position at 200 meters above sea level at the foot of Monte Tauro Mountains. You will be accompanied to the Porta Messina, the entrance to the city, to explore it on your own. Free time for lunch, shopping in the pedestrian zone along the Corso Umberto I, with a visit to the “superpanoramic” Ancient Roman Theatre that even today,like 2300 years ago, is a place of art and culture.

Departure from your hotel at 7:00 am. Arrival in Monreale where the local guide will meet us. The facade, overlooking piazza Guglielmo II, is sided by two square towers and preceded by a XVIII portico. The vast and solemn interior is absolutely majestic. We walk through the old city and we will discover the amazing Palermo’s monuments rich of Byzantine, Arab-Norman and Baroque architecture. Visit of  Piazza Pretoria and the Martorana church, one of Palermo’s most famous Norman churches with very refined Byzantine mosaics inside. Visit of the cathedral, with its spire towers, its double lancet windows, its intertwined and pointed arches. Rising among the narrow streets and the 3 or 4 storey buildings of the Cassaro, it is fantastically majestic. First stop the Sanctuary at Gibilmanna , surrounded by beautiful Mediterranean vegetation . Then continue towards Castelbuono, to visit the Castle of the Ventimiglia family, which holds an ancient Palatine Chapel with sacred relics of Saint Ann, the patron saint of Castelbuono. Tasting of local cakes and "manna" at the Pasticceria "Fiaconaro" in the main square.

 We discover the mountains, maybe the nicest in Sicily, in the heart of the Madonie Natural Park. First stop in Gratteria small medieval village of ancient origin, at 680mt of elevation, just 10 km from the fascinating Cefalu coast. One of the most fascinating Gratteri characteristics is the captivating views of the sea and of the coast which possess tones of real sublimity during spring and autumn clear days: a real “terrace overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea”.

The trip continues towards the Sanctuary at Gibilmanna , surrounded by beautiful Mediterranean vegetation . The sanctuary, dedicated to the Madonna, is perched high on the Pizzo San Angelo 800m above sea level. Its name refers to its position from the Arabic Jebel, meaning mountain or hill. The name translates literally as Mountain of Manna. Manna is a sweetish substance, collected in the months of July-August from the Mountain Ash trees which grow in the area. Next to the monastery in a Sicilian property previously used as a stable and guest quarters is a small museum, dedicated to the life and culture of Capuchin friars in the area of sacred vestments and religious paintings on display and other objects relating to their everyday life.

Departure for Castelbuono, surrounded by beautiful Mediterranean vegetation, in the northern part of Sicily. Castelbuono is a small medieval town full of life, history and picturesque corners. The walk goes through the main monuments (you can visit the Ventimiglia Castle which holds an interesting museum and an ancient Palatine Chapel), but also through the most authentic streets. During the tour, we will meet craftsmen and stop at food stores and bars. You will have the opportunity to chat with locals, taste typical pastries (including the now famous panettone Fiasconaro)!
